Have you ever wondered why there are so many arguments online, especially social media? Why is it you’ve got some people like, on completely opposite sides of an argument, and they both feel they’re right?
Well, do this experiment. It’s a quick thing. If you live in a household with someone else who uses social media, just ask them if you can swap Instagram feeds for a second. Like, grab their phone, and you give them yours, and scroll through their Instagram profile, or scroll through their Facebook page. And you will see that the person who lives in the same house as you, who sits beside you, who you spend a lot of time with, is getting a completely different experience of the world because they have different inputs feeding them, feeding their thoughts, their dopamine hits, their attitudes, their influences.
You know the old saying, like, you become like the people you’re around? Well, you become a product of the type of feed you’re letting into your brain. So that little experiment always blows my mind. I look across sometimes at my wife’s social media. She’s seeing beautiful baby clothes, or nice food or a celebrity. In my feed, it’s surfboards, and social media rants, and so forth, right?
So that little experiment is just so telling. And it explains why people are operating the way they are. They think they’re right, they have this certain view of the world. And even if everything else was the same, it’s just the fact that the inputs being different will turn out a very different perception. So be kind to others. Be compassionate. And remember when you’re dealing with anyone else, try and picture their feed and their influence and the fact that it’s probably very, very different to yours.
So take the time to be a good listener, to understand their perspective, and try doing what I do, and this is… I’ve got a sort of positive-only philosophy these days on social media. I’m not going to wade into arguments, or get into conversations where there’s no win. You won’t win by wading into a discussion and trying to convince someone to change their perspective, because there’s so many other inputs that have biased them. It’s a no-win game. “Just let them be them, you be you,” as Gary Vee would probably say, and enjoy your little world the way it is, and don’t worry about anyone else.
