James Schramko here, and when your computer starts slowing down and gets full, we start running defrags, and we clear the cache, and we turn it off and on and we get it tuned up again.
Well, the same can happen when we clog up our activities. When our diary is just too full, when we’re trying to take on too many tasks, we just have to throw these tasks out. We have to score them. And a great tool that I recommend, and it’s in my book, Work Less Make More, is using effective hourly rate as a filter.
The first step, of course, is to delete the things that you shouldn’t be doing at all. And then we score all the activities. Anything with a low effective hourly rate, that is, it doesn’t make you a lot of money for the time spent should be delegated to someone else if you can’t delete it at all and then you should get on to the high-level tasks. So, use that as a prime filter. Is this a high effective hourly rate? And if not, it probably has to go.
You’ve only got finite capacity for your time that you spend on your business so make sure that when you do spend the time on it, it’s on very, very high-level activities; the things that only you can do or that you are the best in the world at or that you absolutely love to do and get rid of everything else.
