Well, the first thing is I see a lot of people advertising for this particular role. They want the Swiss Army knife. They’re trying to hire someone who can do all of this stuff. That’s very unrealistic.
We need to stop asking for a jack-of-all-trades VA. You can have it but you got to grow your own. Because as you know, Swiss Army knives don’t grow on trees, right? You’re going to have to develop this new invention yourself. But I’ll give you the tools to do this.
The first thing is we got to hire for attitude. Attitude trumps skills every day of the week, especially if you’re making Grange. If you’re going for the long haul, be prepared to start someone who’s maybe not that skilled but they have a fantastic attitude. And I’ve always gone for attitude.
Always reference check when you’re hiring people. If you can look at the cards in a game of cards, and you don’t look at the cards, you’re insane. But I do see this mistake made a lot. People hire people and they don’t reference check. They don’t go and ask the previous employer. How is this person? Tell me about them. They don’t go and ask someone who worked at the place.
They don’t ask the secretary. This is very important if you’re dealing with sales people, because I can 100% guarantee if you have a bad salesperson, the secretary is going to hate them. So the secretary is basically the boss of any business and tap into that pipeline because they know everything about everything. But if you don’t look at the reference and you could have, that’s your mistake.
