James Schramko here with a tip for you if you have a small team, any kind of business at all, and you want the best team members.
Well, of course, to have the best team members, you recruit well, and then you make sure they have training. And by training, I mean ongoing. Not just whatever degree they did before they came to work for you, or whatever they were working on before, you need to have ongoing training.
So what I used to do when I was running the Mercedes-Benz dealership, was I set up a big spreadsheet, and it listed every employee down one column. And then across the top, it had the topics that I needed them to be trained on. And then I would simply put a check in the box as we went through the training. So I call this a training register.
You can do this for yourself. If you have no team and you’re just a solo operator, figure out what it is that you like to learn. Just like Bill Gates is an avid reader of books, he just consumes books all year long. Same with Warren Buffett, the top people in their field are learning and they’re not staying still. Over there is actually a stack of books on my desk that I’m working my way through as well.
So make yourself a training register. What is it that you need to learn and master? And what are you reading about it now? What course have you purchased to understand that? And also do it for your team. In my team right now, they’re learning about social media, leveraging videos, and they’re also doing other things regarding website development, syndication, SEO and so on. But we always have ongoing training.
So get your training register sorted, put some ticks in the boxes and you will deepen your knowledge because remember, a trained team member is a better performer than an untrained team member. And it’s your advantage, too. Almost no adults read a business book after they leave school; they stopped studying and they start consuming. You’ve got the advantage. Go for it.
