James Schramko here. Today, I’m going to share a story with you about something I did when I was learning how to be a business owner but before I had a business.
When I had a job as a General Sales Manager, I really wanted to learn about marketing. So, I started reading books and watching training. And I was writing flyers, business flyers. And I would actually go out to local businesses and I would write flyers advertising their business and then I would have them printed up and I’d have two different versions so I could split test.
And then I would get them printed and distributed in the local area at my own expense. And then I would ask the business owner which version had more people bring the coupon in. And my local dry cleaners found one that was much more appealing than the other, and it helped me start to get a feel for offers.
So, I had all the elements. I had the headline, the sub-headline, the body copy, the bullets, the call-to-action, a guarantee, the picture, the caption. All of these elements are on these flyers and it was through practicing when I wasn’t even getting paid that I started to build my experience. So, I started doing these things a long time before I was able to get paid a lot of money to do this sort of stuff.
I also used to work on the school trivia council. So, I would help the other school parents which were actually all moms make more money for the school trivia night. And I’d sit there and I would use my business knowledge in the school environment for free to learn how to turn a launch or a marketing effort into a fantastic success. In fact, we made so much money from the school fundraising club the year that I helped them that I documented it at all and one day, I might reveal some of the campaigns that I did to make so much more.
In fact, if you’re interested in finding out more about this, let me know where you see this video and I’ll go and pull out the file and I’ll share a couple more tips with you about that.
