James Schramko here. Today, I’m sharing with you a tip if you are shy.
If you don’t think you could make a video like the one I’m making right now, you might be surprised. I’m going to give you a few techniques to help you overcome that fear.
I know what you’re thinking, you’re too shy put yourself out there and you’ll get a heap of criticism, people will judge you and all of those terrible things. Well, the fact is, social media platforms really favor video content and it’s a great, short way to get in front of your ideal audience.
Look, one thing you could do is use slides and just do the voice. You can even hire a voiceover artist. So if you want to use video and you’re just too shy, then use slides and hire a voiceover artist. I mean, of course, you could hire an actor but that gets a little more complicated.
The other thing you could do is, just keep this in mind – when you do publish your first videos, no one’s going to be watching them. There’s hardly any audience, generally. When you start making these videos, it just trickles. You’ll see one or two video views. That’s it.
The thing is, you only need 10, 20, 30, 40 to get enough feedback to know if it’s terrible or not. I’ve also got a filter in place. I’ve asked my team to let me know if the video is not up to scratch and we shouldn’t publish it. Sometimes my team member will say, ‘Boss, I think this video is a bit grainy or it could be better if you could just redo it, that’d be great.’ So they are a filter for my business.
Another thing that you can consider is practice to the camera. You could make 20 or 30 versions of that video until you feel comfortable to release it out into the public. It’s better than actually practicing in front of a mirror, too, because by playing the video back you’ll be able to see your mannerisms. Do you scratch your face? Do you touch your collar? Do you start lisping when you get tired? Do you have a weird eye movement? These things can happen. I noticed a lot of these things when I started watching videos of myself way back when I did acting school.
Which leads me to my next tip – get some help. Go and do some acting training, get some practice in an environment that makes you a little bit uncomfortable, that gets you on the edge but in a safe place. Back then, there was a class of five or six people so even though I felt a little foolish, I wasn’t broadcasting it on Facebook.
So with all of these tips, hopefully, you now feel a little more comfortable about making face-to-camera videos because if you can, you’ll give your audience an opportunity to get to know you so much better, to be able to trust you, to get a feel for what you look and sound like, and that really does bridge the gap between stranger and trusted authority. So get out there, make a face-to-camera video, and please share it with me. I’d love to see what you’ve come up with.
