James Schramko here. Today, I want to help you think about why status is driving you.
When I was at Mercedes-Benz, I used to dress the part. I used to wear the clothes that made it comfortable for my customers to deal with me. I had a nice watch and I had a nice pen. I had nice shoes. I had nice ties. And over time, things like Black American Express Card and Rolex and all those sorts of things became very important.
But as time goes on and as I’ve removed myself from that environment and got my own business, I’ve found that I’m less interested in those things because those status things were part of the mix back then and I’m sure that people covet them when they don’t have them. But the truth is when you get them, you realize that’s actually not the most important thing. Things like health, things like family, things like meaningful work can actually be more important. You won’t see the billionaire founders of some of the biggest companies in the world attracted to such things. And it’s quite well documented that people like Warren Buffett have second-hand things like cars, etc.
Now, I’m not saying you have to not have those things. I’m just saying, I wonder if you’re still attracted to them and you haven’t really questioned why. So maybe, status isn’t as important as you think and maybe there are other things you could put your focus on. Just something to think about today.
I hope you do ponder that and it might be part of your process to work less and make more is to let go of some of the things that you don’t actually need anyway.
