So in my profession, as a salesperson, I used to do a lot of follow-up. And frankly, if you just do follow-up versus not doing follow-up, that can make a big difference in your life, especially if you’re doing business and you like making an income from it. So, a couple of tips here.
Firstly is when you’re crafting your message for follow-up, make sure that it’s relevant, and make sure that it is genuine. So it has to be relating to the person, their interests, the topic, the discussion, and it needs to be special. It can’t just be a churned-out-template-type response because those things fall flat.
Secondly, think about the format of your follow-up. There’s a few different options. Obviously, you’ve got text or written word, you’ve got audio, and you’ve got video. And there’s a few options within those. You can, for example, use a phone to record a video, or you can upload natively on social media, direct messages using the live option. But I generally suggest you record a video in advance and then load it so that you can practice. This is a Loom video that I’m using now, which I have on my computer and on my telephone. And I really like Loom, you get sort of bonus points for that, because when they watch it, you get notified. And that helps you understand when people are available. For example, you might want to do a follow-up phone call. So that’s another way you can follow up is a phone call, an SMS, a Skype message. You could send something in the post, whether it’s a letter or a postcard, a gift you can use, a courier, there’s a lot of ways to follow up. Again, big difference between follow-up versus no follow-up.
And the final thing is, don’t just think about following up prospects, also follow up clients and peers. So you can actually follow up people in your industry, who maybe haven’t connected with for a while, especially of late and just follow up. Get in their DM and just say hi. Also use pictures, if you think of something or see something that’s really relevant for somebody. And you know, they’d connect with it. For example, I have a friend, Andrew Fox, and he’s absolutely obsessed with Porsche. So if I saw a lovely Porsche on the side of the road, I’d take a picture of it. And I’d send them the picture and I’d say, hey, this reminded me of you. That’s relevant. It’s sincere. And it’s a connection.
So anyway, these are just a few things about follow-up. Main things are, do it, pick a medium that suits you, use different channels, and think about prospects, customers, and peers. And if you start doing this on a regular basis, you’ll be amazed how your world becomes more prosperous, because it’s all about network and connection, and showing that you care.
