James here, coming at you from the Maldives. I was in a shop when we arrived here and one of my customers was getting a SIM card. And I noticed his wallet was this thick.
And I said, Hey, let’s sit down and go through it together. And we did. And after I went through the wallet with him, we discovered that he only needed about three items. And all the rest were optional. And he’s carrying it all around for no reason other than that’s the way he’s always done it. And now he’s got this new leaner way.
But I think it’s a great metaphor for how we run our business, and how we run our lives. How many times are we carrying around things that we don’t need anymore? How many extra things do we have there that we’ve never questioned? So try this exercise: go and have a look at your wallet or your purse and see what are you carrying around that you don’t need? And then think about in your business, what are you carrying in your business that you no longer need?
I hope you can minimalize and let some things go and create a better system. If you want more information on this, maybe I’ll go through my wallet which has about four things in it and explain exactly how that system works.
