01:04 – A peculiarity of my Philippines team
01:51 – Increasing productivity
Okay, James here filming at The Temple of Dawn. I’ve got to admit I was a little disappointed. I thought it was going to be The Temple of Doom but in any case, no, I’m just kidding. Today’s tip is about getting to know your overseas team.
Do you have a team overseas?
So you may know I’ve got quite a few people who work with me in my business and they’re in a different country to me. And as I visit different countries like I am today, I thought I should pass this tip on. This is something you may not be aware of but if you happen to work with people overseas, I highly recommend that you get to know their culture a little bit. Find out a few words in their language.
What I found out about my team
It’s going to go a long way to building up rapport, to reducing risk, to increasing the ability to communicate and some little subtle things. Like one thing I found out, especially with my Philippines team, is that generally, they will always have the lowest Internet speed available. They will never default to the fastest Internet.
That’s because it’s quite a big expense. It’s an extra $30, $50 or $70 per month in US dollar terms, which is quite a lot. You could pretty much add a zero for the local employees if you want to translate how much that would cost extra. But if you happen to have managerial team members, a virtual assistant or a videographer in your team and you upgrade their speed for them, they’ll probably have to go out and get a contract.
But then if you subsidize that Internet speed upgrade, if you go from 1mbps to 4 or 5 or 7, they’re going to really love you and you’ve gone out of your way to understand the culture more and that’s just one of the cultural things that I found.
Remember this tip
Now, it’s going to increase productivity, it’s going to make you happy and it’s going to make them happy. So today’s cultural tip is: Get to know your overseas team. If they’re in a different culture, you really want to make an effort to understand that. See how that’s going to really increase the results you get from your business and I hope this tip has been helpful.
I’m James Schramko and I’m about to go and climb that Temple of Dawn. Take care.
